Imperfectly Perfect Since 1907
A love letter to the quirks of early grotesques, GD Grio revives the spirit of Venus Grotesk (1907) with a contemporary twist. It’s not trying to be neutral—it’s proud of its wonky terminals, high-waisted capitals, and unapologetically single-storey g.
Where Helvetica smoothed out the human touch, Grio leans into it. It’s functional without being boring, minimal without being sterile. The kind of typeface that holds its own in body text but still winks at you from a headline.
Built for today but rooted in history, GD Grio embraces the irregularities that once made Venus a favorite of modernists like Jan Tschichold. Its influence has echoed through typographic history—Monotype’s Grotesque 215 and 216 series from the 1920s, created for hot metal typesetting, were reportedly loosely based on Venus, eventually shaping the DNA of typefaces like Arial.
It’s beautiful, practical, and just the right amount of rebellious. Just like good design should be.
